Everyone’s talking about Artificial Intelligence – but what does it mean for the creative sector and artists? Can a machine really be an artist?
The University of Edinburgh in partnership with the National Galleries for Scotland and Digital Skills Education, is hosting an event on Weds 7th October which is aimed at S5-S6 Photography or Art and Design pupils. This session is ideal for pupils who are interested in learning more about AI and how it might affect people’s ability to be creative.
On the day, your class will attend two workshops:
- A guided tour around Wendy McMurdo’s photography exhibition introducing its key works. There will be creative tasks to explore the themes of the exhibition.
- The Unbelievably Creative AI Show – an interactive workshop where your pupils will explore and debate the quality and creativity of AI-generated work.
We’ll be exploring the intersection of AI and photography and will spotlight artwork featured in the Wendy McMurdo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. We’ll look at questions like:
- What makes a photo a photo? What makes it art?
- What does a photo capture? A record of an event? A memory? A feeling?
- Does manipulation change the nature of what a photo is?
