This event took place on 25th February 2021.

Data, and the stories that they tell, can be visualised in many surprising ways. Find out more by coming along to Data is Beautiful.

Data, and the stories that they tell, can be visualised in many surprising ways. They can take us beyond bar charts and graphs to new creative and playful representations of the world and its data.

In this session we will look at some of the different projects that have used data to create new visualisations and interpretations, and some classroom activities provided by Data Education in Schools project and inspired by the award winning book Dear Data by Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec, that show how data, including the personal and emotional, can be drawn and illustrated in new ways.

This session, focussing on Data visualisation complements our second live lesson called ‘Data Selfies’ that will run in March 2021 and is a partnership with Skills Development Scotland. Check our Events page for further information and sign up to bring your class along to this live lesson: https://dataschools.education/events/

Speakers in the ‘Data is Beautiful’ session will include members of the Data Education in Schools team and Brendan McCarthy from Ray Interactive.

Brendan McCarthy founded Ray Interactive in 2017, an agency that specialises in live interactive experiences, creative coding and generative design.

We will hear about two innovative projects Ray Interactive have devised; one combining open data sets on stellar constellations with audience proximity to create unique abstract animations and an upcoming partnership with the Botanics that will create static and moving images from 100 years of archival rhododendron data.
